YTD Update Norwegian Farmed Salmon Exports, as of week 16 2013


The Norwegian Farmed Exports Report writes on a weekly basis on movements in the tonnes exported, the average price and the value of total exports of Norwegian farmed salmon based on data from Statistics Norway in the Weekly Seafood Update (see here for the most recent report). Below is an update for the same statistics, but on a Year-to-Date (YTD) basis, as of week 16 for the years 2006 to 2013.

The Norwegian farmed salmon producers has so far this year exported 229,036 tonnes of fresh and frozen salmon, down 5.2% on last year and the second highest volume ever recorded as of YTD week 16.

The weighted average price of NOK 37.16 per kilo so far this year is the second highest ever reported and was 34.0% higher than last year.

The value of YTD total exports is about NOK 8.495 billion, the highest ever reported as of week 16 in any year, representing a 26.6% increase on last year.

Prices Approaching Record Highs: Norwegian Farmed Salmon Exports Weekly (week 16 2013)


Statistics Norway reported an export of 13,747 metric tonnes of fresh/chilled and frozen farmed salmon from Norwegian salmon farmers in week 16, 2013. On a rolling average four week basis volume in tonnes exported decreased 18.7% (-2,901 tonnes) on the same period last year.

The weighted average price per kilo for the week of NOK 43.13 was up 42.4% (NOK 12.14) YoY on a rolling average four week basis.

The value of exports for the week was NOK 592.911 million, an increase of 17.0% (NOK 75.075 million) on last year on a rolling average four week basis.

Tonnes exported for the week declined for the ninth week in a row on last year (rolling four week basis). Prices for the week increased for the 27th week in a row on last year (rolling four week basis) and the NOK 43.13 weighted average price for the week was the highest recorded for 105 weeks (since week 15 in 2011 when it was NOK 43.45 - the highest ever recorded). As price growth again was higher than the decline in volume, the total value of exports continued to increase on last year and represented the 47th week in a row with an increase on last year (on a rolling four week basis).

Prices above NOK 40 for the First Time in 100 weeks: Norwegian Farmed Salmon Exports Weekly (week 15 2013)


Statistics Norway reported an export of 13,771 metric tonnes of fresh/chilled and frozen farmed salmon from Norwegian salmon farmers in week 15, 2013. On a rolling average four week basis volume in tonnes exported decreased 11.7% (-1,843 tonnes) on the same period last year.

The weighted average price per kilo for the week of NOK 42.21 was up 36.8% (NOK 10.48) YoY on a rolling average four week basis.

The value of exports for the week was NOK 581.234 million, an increase of 20.8% (NOK 92.360 million) on last year on a rolling average four week basis.

Tonnes exported for the week declined for the eight week in a row on last year (rolling four week basis). Prices for the week increased for the 26th week in a row on last year (rolling four week basis) and the NOK 42.21 weighted average price for the week was the highest recorded for 100 weeks (since week 19 in 2011 when it was NOK 40.04, prices have not been above NOK 40.00 since until now). As price growth again was higher than the decline in volume, the total value of exports continued to increase on last year and represented the 46th week in a row with an increase on last year (on a rolling four week basis). 

The longer term trends (52 week moving average YoY percentage change) show tonnes exported increasing at a slower rate with the weighted average price and the value of exports increasing at an accelerated pace. 

Please note: we reported last week that prices hit the highest level for 99 "months". This should of course have been 99 "weeks" instead of "months" (the report has since been corrected).

Prices Hit 99 Week High: Norwegian Farmed Salmon Exports Weekly (week 14 2013)


Statistics Norway reported an export of 11,519 metric tonnes of fresh/chilled and frozen farmed salmon from Norwegian salmon farmers in week 14, 2013. On a rolling average four week basis volume in tonnes exported decreased 9.2% (-1,466 tonnes) on the same period last year.

The weighted average price per kilo for the week of NOK 39.83 was up 33.2% (NOK 9.43) YoY on a rolling average four week basis.

The value of exports for the week was NOK 458.800 million, an increase of 21.0% (NOK 94.584 million) on last year on a rolling average four week basis.

Tonnes exported for the week declined for the seventh week in a row on last year (rolling four week basis). Prices for the week increased for the 25th week in a row on last year (rolling four week basis) and the NOK 39.83 weighted average price for the week was the highest recorded for 99 weeks (since week 19 in 2011 when it was NOK 40.04). Driven by the YoY increases over the past 25 weeks, the longer term trend in price changes (52 week moving average YoY percentage change) is now finally above zero again (see bottom chart). As price growth was higher than the decline in volume, the total value of exports continued to increase on last year and represented the 45th week in a row with an increase on last year (on a rolling four week basis).

Volumes Down Sharply, Prices Continue to Increase: Norwegian Farmed Salmon Exports Weekly (week 13 2013)


Statistics Norway reported an export of 11,343 metric tonnes of fresh/chilled and frozen farmed salmon from Norwegian salmon farmers in week 13, 2013. On a rolling average four week basis volume in tonnes exported decreased 12.7% (-2,228 tonnes) on the same period last year.

The weighted average price per kilo for the week of NOK 37.74 was up 33.4% (NOK 9.42) YoY on a rolling average four week basis.

The value of exports for the week was NOK 429.237 million, an increase of 16.4% (NOK 80.965 million) on last year on a rolling average four week basis.

Tonnes exported for the week declined for the sixth week in a row on last year (rolling four week basis) and the 12.7% decline for the week was the biggest for more than 11 years (week 8 2002). Prices for the week increased for the 24th week in a row on last year (rolling four week basis), increasing at the fastest pace for seven weeks. As price growth was higher than the decline in volume, the total value of exports continued to increase on last year and represented the 44th week in a row with an increase on last year (on a rolling four week basis).
